IDENTITY AND SELF-REALISATION: A STUDY OF WOMEN CHARACTER IN SELECT PROSE OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE

Authors:

Sucharita Choudhury

Abstract:

The paper basically highlights character of women in proses of Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore’s female characters are steadfast and headstrong in their own ways. Some of them have challenged the ways of the world, while others have held onto their ground strong and steady without ever compromising their honour and dignity. The thematic concerns of the short stories discussed here reflect Tagore’s ideas regarding his immediate socio-cultural milieu. Needless to say, Tagore’s personal association with them has profoundly impacted the way in which he has sketched the women characters in the short stories. True to the spirit of the age in which the stories have been written or are set, his women characters too tread on a forward journey towards finding their selves and identities by shedding off the shrouds of depreciation and disgrace.
