DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTIDIMENSIONAL MEASURE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING; PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING SCALE

Abstract:

It aims to develop a scale to measure psychological wellbeing. Ryff’s theory of wellbeing is taken as the primary reference for the item writing and underline the theoretical framework. Data were collected randomly from 420 emerging adults from Ernakulam district, Kerala. Through item analysis, 14 items were extracted from 50 draft items. Exploratory factor analysis is used to find out the dimensions. Extraction Method was Principal Component Analysis and Rotation Method was Promax with Kaiser Normalization. Four dimensions were find out.  First three dimensions contain 4 items each and last dimension contain 2 items. Psychometric properties were found to be satisfactory. Cronbach alpha was find out as measure of internal consistency. Cronbach alpha of the total test was 0.7, and each dimension has above 0.5. And split half reliability and concurrent validity with Ryff’s original scale of psychological wellbeing was find out, both are satisfactory.
