Basically
living in the upper parts like in the district of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and
Sivasagar, Matak is an important aboriginal ethnic group of Assam. Culture
shape and reshape the identities of different groups and its people and play a
crucial role to determine the status of men and women within this group through
practices, norms, religion, marriage, festivals, beliefs, myths etc. Infect it
is the culture which defines male and female as the men and women through the
gender socialization process. Within a patriarchal base system religion as a
cultural tool define women lower positon in this ethnic group. But here
occurring dual sources reflect a complex situation regarding this religion
issue. From the earlier time exist as tribal religious worshipped represent a
specific position of Matak women but later on adopting Neo –Vaishnava push
women lower position. Thus, this paper analysis a complex interplay by religion
to determine the Matak women status in the cultural sphere in the context of
Dibrugarh district.
