Abstract:

The National Education Policy 2020 signifies a significant shift in Indian education, emphasising teacher training to enhance overall quality. This paper examines how teacher education is being restructured to meet the policy's goals of equity, inclusion, competency-based learning, and sustainable development. It highlights major reforms such as the introduction of a four-year integrated B.Ed. programme, the integration of teacher education into multidisciplinary universities, improved accreditation processes, and the gradual shutdown of low-quality Teacher Education Institutions. Using a descriptive–analytical approach that integrates both qualitative and quantitative data, the study assesses how the implementation of NEP 2020 affects learning quality and holistic development. Data were collected from secondary and higher secondary schools through questionnaires, rating scales, interviews, and document reviews. Results were analysed using statistical tools such as the mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. The findings indicate a positive relationship between NEP-aligned teaching practices and improvements in competency-based learning, critical thinking, student engagement, and overall growth in cognitive, social, emotional, and ethical domains. Schools employing experiential and multidisciplinary methods demonstrated stronger student outcomes. However, challenges persist, particularly related to infrastructure, digital access, and teacher training, especially in rural and under-resourced areas. The study concludes that attaining comprehensive quality in teacher education demands systemic coordination among curriculum revisions, professional growth, institutional governance, and inclusive policies. Effective implementation relies on continuous capacity enhancement, consistent policy application, and equitable resource allocation. NEP 2020 offers a robust framework to transform teacher education into a rigorous, research-based, practical system that supports holistic learner development across India's diverse educational environment.
