Artificial
Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force globally, and India has
rapidly ascended as a major contributor to this scientific domain. This study
offers a comprehensive bibliometric study of Indian AI publications between
2001 and 2025 based on data from OpenAlex. This paper explores the development
of artificial intelligence research within India. It identifies the
universities that publish the most work, categorizes the main topics of study,
and describes the types of articles being produced. The
number of research papers authored on the topic of artificial intelligence has
increased tremendously since the year 2015. Much of this new research is coming
out of privately-operated tech institutes and the Indian Institutes of
Technology (IITs). Much of their attention is being directed towards the use of
AI in supporting daily disciplines such as agriculture, health, and maintenance
of computer networks. On the whole, this research is an immensely helpful
resource to scientists and the government officials as it provides them with a
clear picture of what India is already doing with AI and where the country is
headed next.
