The
tribal population constitutes a major part of India. Tribal diversity is a part
of all the diversities of India. The present study focuses on the present
challenges that tribal students face in accessing and participating in
education, which is their fundamental right. By employing the narrative review
method, this paper synthesized empirical studies published between 2017 and
2025. The review identifies six recurring barriers that are language mismatch
between home and school, socio-economic hardships, gender-based disadvantages,
inadequate school infrastructure, culturally irrelevant curricula, and gaps in
teacher preparedness. Statistical data show their high enrollment at the
elementary level, but there is a sharp decline at secondary and higher
secondary stages, revealing deeper issues of retention and transition. Overall,
the study strongly emphasizes the need for the implementation of MTB-multilingual
education and culturally rooted and contextual curriculum, along with community-oriented
strategies that address both the academic and social realities of tribal
learners.
