MGNREGAct’s findings are mentioned in
almost every discussion regarding the anti-poverty measures initiated by the
Government of India over the two decades. It has emerged as the flagship
program of the Government for curbing poverty and unemployment. Awareness generation
regarding their provision in rural society is an important challenge of
MGNREGA.
-
Objectives : This study aims to assess the awareness level of MGNREGA
beneficiaries in Tapi district, Gujarat,
and explore its relationship with the number of employment days received under
the scheme.
-
Methods : The research adopts a descriptive and empirical approach
using both primary data, collected via structured questionnaires from 502 respondents
in the Uchchhal block, and secondary sources including government reports and
academic studies. A five-point Likert scale measured awareness, and Spearman's
rank correlation was used to analyse the relationship between awareness and
employment days.
-
Results : Findings indicate high awareness of basic entitlements
like job cards and 100 days’ employment but poor understanding of procedural
rights such as unemployment allowance and planning of works. A statistically
significant but modest positive correlation (r = 0.258, p < 0.01) was found
between awareness levels and employment days.
-
Conclusions : The results underscore the need for enhanced awareness
programs and community participation initiatives to fully realize MGNREGA’s
objectives. Awareness is a key driver of scheme utilization and can reduce
dependency on intermediaries, making the program more effective and equitable.
