Although
academic libraries are highly important for educational and scholarly purposes,
they are extremely susceptible to disaster both naturally occurring and
manmade. For effective management of disasters, it is crucial to protect
library collections, the buildings in which they are housed and the services
that are provided. The provision of disaster management in university libraries
in India is poor, especially in the region of Rajasthan. The objective of this
research study is to investigate the major problems and obstacles which hinder
the enforcement of disaster management plans in the university libraries of
this state. In this study a mixed methods research methodology was used
combining both qualitative and quantitative data. A survey questionnaire was
distributed to university librarians and a selection of university administrators,
who were also interviewed in more depth. The key obstacles encountered in the
study include inadequate funding for the Programme, insufficient training of
personnel, the absence of a formal policy on disaster management, a general
lack of awareness and inadequate institutional support. A number of elements
must be present if a university is to be well-prepared for disasters. Firstly,
a strong commitment from all university officials is required. Disaster plans
should be integrated into university procedures and policies. Regular drills
should also be run to keep students informed. Finally, the university must ensure
it has the necessary funds to handle disasters. The study's results are useful
for librarians and policymakers to increase disaster resistance in academic
libraries.
