In the 21st century, as education is encountering
various new circumstances that is making
knowledge a pillar of the wealth and power of nations, transforming at an
alarming pace, the need of the hour is rethinking pedagogy at the secondary and
higher-secondary school level since in the context of globalization, education
in India should emphasize the importance of proactive and creative strategies
improving scope for sustainable education.
Hence, the main objective of the study is to critically understand and
analyse the pedagogical methods and approaches and the existing curriculum
pattern prevalent in secondary and higher-secondary level schools within
Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
It is a descriptive mixed method study where quantitative data has been
substantiated with qualitative data, providing a comprehensive in-depth insight
on the education system in India through the perspectives of 100 school
students (50 from National Education Board and 50 from State Education Board)
of class 9, 10, 11, 12.
The study focuses on the pedagogy, curriculum and evaluation pattern of
secondary and higher-secondary level because it is the crucial stage in the
hierarchy of education where students start choosing subject streams to explore
the world beyond the school gate and pursue a career to get established in
life. In this context, it becomes necessary to understand whether the
pedagogical methods and approaches implemented in schools affiliated to both
State Board and National Boards are being beneficial to students or not in
taking career decisions in their life to enhance the scope for sustainable
education and contributing to the economy of the nation.
