The healthcare
system of India can be characterized by a long historical trajectory. This
paper examines the evolution of India’s healthcare system, focusing on its
foundational colonial legacy, structural reforms, and present-day scenario. The
analysis focuses on the State’s involvement in the health sector during the
colonial era. This also led to the establishment of several medical
institutions in India. Through policies such as National Health Policy (NHP)
1983, 2002, 2017, the Indian State made primary healthcare a top priority after
gaining independence. This paper provides a critical analysis of the historical
shifts and contemporary challenges within India’s public healthcare system.
