Agriculture remains a cornerstone of economies
worldwide, especially in rural areas such as Muzaffarpur district in Bihar,
where it is the primary economic activity. Despite its significance, there is a
concerning decline in youth engagement in agriculture. This research paper
examines the role of policy in addressing the challenges faced by youth
engaging in agriculture. The study identifies several critical challenges that
hinder youth participation. Youth often perceive agriculture as a less attractive
career option, compounded by migration to urban areas in search of better
opportunities. Effective policies are essential for addressing these issues and
creating an environment that supports and encourages youth involvement in
agriculture. Policies can influence youth engagement through several
mechanisms. This study adopts a descriptive approach. It involves surveying 100
youths from rural areas, using structured open-ended questionnaires to collect
information.
The findings conclude that a
comprehensive policy framework is necessary to address the multifaceted
challenges youth faces in agriculture. Recommendations include enhancing access
to financial resources, improving agricultural education, investing in rural
infrastructure, and changing perceptions of agriculture as a career. By
addressing these areas, policies can better support youth, fostering their
engagement and ensuring the sustainability of agriculture in Muzaffarpur and
similar regions.
