INDEXING AND DESCRIPTION OF FLORA IN SANKAR DEV'S LITERATURE: A CRITICAL REVIEW

Authors:

Dulu Moni Das

Abstract:

The backbone of “Bor Asom”, Jagat Guru Srimanta Sankardev who united the diversified culture and heritage of Medieval Assam is also a naturalist and man with scientific temper and attributes. The love and affection of Sankardev for nature and his knowledge about flora are beautifully described in his writings. But in his description most of the names of flora are found in Sanskrit or Brajawali language and many plants are found to be unfamiliar for the present generation. Moreover, the descriptions of flora were lacking systematic botanical studies due to the lack of development of the subject concept at that time. The present study tried to identify and validate the flora mentioned by Srimanta Sankardev in his literature which may bring implications for future research studies.
